In celebration of National Down Syndrome Awareness Month, the “Stride for Smiles: Fun Run for Brighter Futures” served as a powerful platform uniting students, educators, and advocates in a collective mission to promote awareness, inclusivity, and support for individuals with Down Syndrome. Taking place in February 2024, this impactful gathering witnessed the enthusiastic participation of University of the Cordilleras Criminology Interns, alongside students from Baguio City National High School, as well as representatives from a variety of organizations dedicated to this important cause.
Every step taken during the event represented not just a race, but a commitment to solidarity and breaking down barriers for those with Down Syndrome. The Stride for Smiles was not merely an athletic endeavor; it was a heartfelt statement aiming to foster understanding and pave the way for opportunities for individuals with special needs.
The involvement of UC Criminology Interns underscored their dedication to justice and their role as advocates for social equality and inclusivity. Their participation resonated with the principles of the UN Sustainable Development Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities, emphasizing the critical need to uphold equal rights and acceptance for all, irrespective of their abilities.
As each runner crossed the finish line, they carried forth a poignant message: “every stride taken advances us toward a world where everyone, regardless of ability, is valued and empowered to thrive.“
