In a significant stride toward advancing forensic science education, the University of the Cordilleras (UC) Bachelor of Forensic Science program signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Philippine National Police Regional Forensic Unit – Cordillera (RFU-COR) on May 2, 2023. The partnership aims to provide robust hands-on training and field experience for incoming forensic interns, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 4 (Quality Education), 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions), and 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
The MOU signing ceremony featured key university representatives, including Vice President for Academic Affairs and Research Dr. Ariel Nimo B. Pumecha, Dean Dr. Robino D. Cawi, and Program Chair Dr. Christian T. Pascual. Chief PCOL Marites Villacarlos, who served as the keynote speaker, represented the PNP Regional Forensic Unit.
In her inspiring speech, PCOL Villacarlos urged the incoming forensic interns to diligently pursue their chosen specialization, underscoring the vital role of forensic expertise in ensuring justice and maintaining the rule of law. She outlined a series of training modules and activities crafted by RFU-COR to equip students with the practical skills and real-world experience necessary for effective forensic investigations.
The event concluded with the official signing of the MOU, symbolizing the dawn of a strategic partnership dedicated to elevating the quality of forensic education and bridging the divide between academic theory and industry practice.
This collaboration underscores UC’s commitment to delivering high-quality education, fostering strategic partnerships, and promoting justice through forensic science—reflecting the global aspirations of the UN SDGs. The partnership is poised to cultivate a more competent and skilled forensic workforce, ultimately contributing to the development of stronger justice institutions within the region.
