On May 5, 2023, an International Symposium was held at the University of the Cordilleras Auditorium which focused on “Expanding Perspectives on Criminal Justice Research”. This distinguished event featured Dr. Shiela Maxwell, a renowned expert in the field, who shared her invaluable insights to the Forensic Science Practicum students. The symposium aimed to enhance the understanding of global justice systems by fostering international collaboration and promoting inclusive research methodologies.

Dr. Maxwell delivered a compelling discourse on the significance of embracing diverse perspectives on crime and justice. Her insights underscored the critical need to look beyond national borders to appreciate the complex societal factors that influence criminal justice. Additionally, Dr. Maxwell stressed the importance of forging robust partnerships among academic institutions, local communities, and governmental bodies. This collaborative ethos aligns with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically Goals 4, 16, and 17, which advocate for quality education, access to justice, and global partnerships—elements paramount to the development of equitable justice systems. Attendees were exposed to international case studies that illuminated how research and collaborative efforts can facilitate the creation of safer and more inclusive societies.

This symposium is a prime example of how academic institutions can lead in shaping innovative solutions for today’s pressing justice issues. It further served as a source of inspiration for the next generation of forensic science professionals, motivating them to engage with criminal justice issues on a global platform. Participants emerged with a clearer appreciation of their responsibilities as future advocates of reform, emboldened to effect positive change within their communities. The University of the Cordilleras’ commitment to facilitating educational events such as this illustrates its dedication to nurturing knowledgeable and socially responsible leaders, aimed at building just societies for all.
