Forensic Criminalistics Training: Faculty Professional Advancement

By: Keziah Nicole Fernandez

Two faculty members from the University of the Cordilleras-College of Criminal Justice Education (UC-CCJE), Dr. Jevilyn P. Madalang and Ms. Nathalie P. Esteban, recently committed to a crucial week of specialized training to improve their forensic science abilities. This intensive training, held in Brentwood Apartelle, Baguio City, from November 23 to 30, 2025, aimed to boost the faculty’s skills and teaching methods. This effort supports Quality Education (SDG 4), by strengthening the college’s commitment to providing high-quality, up-to-date education and producing graduates ready for the job market.

Dr. Madalang focused on the Forensic Investigation of Violent Crimes (FIVC) course, while Ms. Esteban trained in the Forensic Arson Detection and Investigation Course (FADIC). The program was sponsored by the Philippine Science Criminalistics, Inc.. Moreover, the training progressed from foundational lectures to highly technical lessons on documentation and analysis of fire behavior. A key element was the hands-on practice, where the professors processed mock crime and fire scenes, collected evidence, and used modern forensic equipment. This practical focus supports Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions (SDG 16), as it ensures the faculty can teach the evidence-based practices needed to support the rule of law and strengthen justice systems.

The training finished with high-stakes preparations for acting as expert witnesses, culminating in a formal “oral defense” before a panel. Their hard work paid off: Dr. Madalang was recognized as Rank 1 in the Oral Defense and Rank 3 Overall in the FIVC class, and Ms. Esteban earned Rank 3 in the Oral Defense for her FADIC course. These achievements confirm their dedication to excellence and enhance their ability to deliver practice-oriented teaching, which will further enrich classroom instruction.
