UC ROTC Cadets Lead Community Tree-Planting Drive at Busol Watershed

By: Cassandra Jacques M. Bautista

On May 24, 2025, the University of the Cordilleras–Philippine Air Force Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (UC–PAF ROTC) Unit, in partnership with Kabataan Kontra Droga at Terorismo (KKDT) Aurora Hill Chapter of Police Station 6, carried out a tree-planting initiative at the Busol Watershed in East Bayan Park, Aurora Hill. The activity, overseen by Sgt. Albin A. Poclet Jr., PAF (Res), sought to strengthen community involvement in environmental preservation and to emphasize the urgent need for climate action.

Under the heat of the sun, cadets and KKDT members worked hand in hand, digging the soil and planting seedlings with determination. Each tree planted represented not just a contribution to the environment but also a commitment to building a greener and healthier city. The cadets embraced the laborious task with pride, their sweat and soiled hands reflecting the fulfillment of taking part in a cause larger than themselves. For many, the seedlings symbolized resilience, carrying with them hopes and wishes that they would grow stronger with each storm and sun they endured.

C/2Lt Jeriza G. Laplana, 3CL, noted the significance of the effort, saying that the officers showed their dedication to helping the community and reminded everyone of their responsibility in promoting a greener and cleaner environment. The experience, while challenging, instilled a sense of unity and responsibility among participants, highlighting how simple actions can bring lasting change.

The initiative is also aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. By planting trees within Baguio’s largest watershed, the activity contributed to Sustainable Development Goal 11 on Sustainable Cities and Communities by improving air quality and reducing urban climate risks. It also supported Sustainable Development Goal 13 on Climate Action through proactive measures to lessen carbon emissions and foster resilience against environmental challenges. At the same time, it advanced Sustainable Development Goal 15 on Life on Land by restoring natural ecosystems and providing new habitats for wildlife.

More than an environmental campaign, the tree-planting served as an educational experience for the cadets. It exposed them to real-world problems and emphasized how discipline, teamwork, and initiative can help address them. The activity reinforced the values of service, pride, and responsibility, while preparing the cadets to respond to future challenges not just as defenders in uniform but as stewards of the environment.

As the planet continues to grapple with the effects of climate change, the UC–PAF ROTC Unit has proven that small, consistent acts of service can inspire broader change. By leading the community in planting trees, the cadets became role models of environmental responsibility, carrying with them the determination to act with pride, purpose, and passion for people and the planet.
