On August 6, 2023, the Locard’s Society of Forensic Science, in collaboration with the Forensic Science Program Interns of the Marilag Paglaom class, hosted a lecture-webinar in partnership with the Region 8 Forensic Unit, aimed at delving into the complexities of forensic pathology. The session featured PMAJ Christian Allan D. Brunio, MD, a distinguished expert in forensic medicine, as the keynote speaker. The event was designed to enhance participants’ understanding of the pivotal role that forensic pathology plays in criminal investigations and public health.
The lecture entitled “Forensic Medicine: Revealing the Secrets of the Deceased,” provided valuable insights into essential elements of forensic pathology, covering topics such as autopsy procedures, post-mortem examinations, and the determination of cause of death. These processes are critical in uncovering vital evidence in cases of both natural and unnatural deaths. PMAJ Brunio highlighted how the examination of the deceased can significantly aid in resolving criminal cases and delivering justice for victims, underscoring the integral role forensic pathologists play in ensuring the accuracy and integrity of their findings.
Forensic pathology serves a fundamental function within both legal and medical spheres. By grasping the scientific principles behind autopsies and the interpretation of post-mortem findings, professionals can more effectively assess the circumstances surrounding a death, ultimately contributing to peace, justice, and strong institutions (SDG 16). Additionally, the event sought to promote quality education (SDG 4) by equipping students and professionals with valuable knowledge that can enhance their future careers in forensic science and criminal justice.
