Bridging Education and Justice: A Deep Dive into Sexual Assault Investigations

By: Joy Nicole C. Canutab

On July 25 and August 3, 2023, a pivotal lecture series focusing on the legal processes surrounding sexual assault investigations was led by PEMS Elvira Casionan and PSSG Amy Baldo and attended by the second-year students enrolled in Forensic 18. The sessions highlighted the intersection of education and justice. PEMS Casionan began by detailing relevant laws and providing case examples, enabling students to distinguish between different sexual assault scenarios and reinforcing the importance of a nuanced understanding of legal frameworks.

Following this, PSSG Baldo outlined the investigative procedures and the crucial documents for a comprehensive case folder, emphasizing meticulous documentation and evidence collection. A powerful segment of the lecture featured video documentation on child exploitation in pornography, shedding light on the vulnerabilities faced by children, particularly those in poverty. This focus not only raised awareness about systemic inequalities but also sparked critical conversations about the need for protective measures.

Training future professionals in these essential processes will foster strong institutions and promote justice. This practical knowledge equips students to engage meaningfully in discussions about victim advocacy and legal responsibilities. Overall, the series empowered students to become advocates for justice, reinforcing the role of quality education in creating a safer and a more equitable society aligned with the principles of sustainable development.
