Exploring Human Remains: UC Hosts Seminar on Forensic Anthropology and Taphonomy

On June 24, 2023, the Forensic Science Practicum students of the University of the Cordilleras organized an insightful seminar on Forensic Anthropology and Taphonomy held at the university’s main campus. This event was an integral part of the academic initiative of uniting students eager to enhance their knowledge of forensic science, particularly concerning the examination of human remains and the processes that influence them over time. The seminar aimed to deepen students’ understanding of essential topics in forensic investigation, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 4, 16, and 17, which emphasize quality education, peace, and collaborative partnerships.

The seminar commenced with the introduction of the distinguished keynote speaker, Dr. Richard Jonathan O. Taduran, a prominent anthropology professor. Dr. Taduran’s extensive expertise in forensic anthropology and taphonomy engaged the audience as he shared valuable insights from his experience, illustrating how the analysis of bones and decomposition significantly contributes to criminal investigations. His presentation enriched the students’ perspective on the critical role these disciplines play in understanding human remains.

As the seminar comes to an end, the importance of ongoing education and research within the field of forensic science, has been highlighted. This event not only expanded the students’ academic knowledge but also highlighted the importance of collaboration among experts, reinforcing the principles set forth in SDG 17. Through this seminar, the Forensic Science Practicum students showcased their commitment in acquiring essential knowledge for crime-solving and justice advancement, which empowers them to make significant contributions to both the field and society.
