By: Joy Nicole C. Canutab

On March 18, 2023, the College of Criminal Justice Education (CCJE) of the University of the Cordilleras successfully conducted a Community Extension engagement in Tocmo Loacan, Itogon, Benguet, dedicated to promoting environmental stewardship through a comprehensive clean-up drive and tree planting initiative. This event was made possible through a collaboration with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Cordillera and local barangay officials, engaging actively with CCJE’s College Student Council Officers, ROTC Officers, Criminology Interns, and faculty members.

The event began with an insightful talk delivered by the Indigenous Peoples Mandatory Representative (IPMR) of Tocmo Loacan, who conveyed the critical importance of the initiative for both the community and the environment. The IPMR highlighted the interconnections between people and nature, emphasizing the necessity of preserving the local ecosystem for the benefit of future generations. This engaging introduction had set the tone for the day’s activities, illustrating how community-driven efforts can effectively contribute to developing sustainable and resilient communities in line with UN SDG 11.

Participants then united for the clean-up drive, collecting waste while simultaneously raising environmental awareness among local residents. This was followed by a tree-planting session, where native saplings were planted in designated areas, furthering a reforestation effort that supports SDG 15. The collaborative nature of this initiative also exemplified the significance of partnerships (SDG 17), as CCJE worked closely with DENR and local officials to strengthen long-term relationships with the community. The event concluded with a renewed dedication to advancing Tocmo Loacan’s sustainability goals, reinforcing CCJE’s commitment to environmental protection and collaborative community engagement.
