On March 2023, third year Forensic Science students of the University of the Cordilleras (UC) engaged in a three-day Hands-on DNA Laboratory Workshop held at the Legarda Campus. This workshop, tailored for those enrolled in the Forensic 16 focusing on DNA Analysis and Molecular Biology, was expertly led by Mr. Rogel Victor Mendoza, a distinguished professional from the University of the Philippines-Diliman.
Under the mentorship of Mr. Mendoza and their faculty instructors, students participated in a series of meticulously designed lab exercises aimed at enhancing their proficiency in forensic DNA analysis. Activities included the purification of genomic DNA from cultured cells and animal tissues, as well as conducting PCR amplification—skills essential for aspiring forensic science professionals. This experiential learning approach allowed students to translate theoretical concepts into practical laboratory applications, equipping them with critical techniques vital for their future roles in promoting justice.
This workshop is a testament to UC’s commitment to delivering a comprehensive and experiential educational experience that addresses the evolving demands of forensic science. By collaborating with esteemed experts from institutions such as the University of the Philippines, UC-CCJE underscores its dedication to enhancing forensic education and cultivating a collaborative learning environment that prepares students to thrive in the dynamic field of forensic science.
